Teacher will introduce a unit on "What is an Insect?" using manual with Insects: Little Giants of the Earth Videodisc.
 
 
You will need a media cart equipped with videodisc player* and the videodisc Insects (available at your local curriculum center).
 
 
 
Brainstorm a list of insect characteristics.
 
View the section of the Insect videodisc on characteristics
 
 
Use their list to check off characteristics mentioned in video. (Record additional characteristics and don't be limited by the original list.)
 
Compare insects with similar characteristics and group into families.
 
Contrast insects with different characteristics and group into families.
 
Take a trip outside to view insects in their habitat and keep a journal of sketches and different kinds of behaviors they have observed.
 
Construct a pie graph based on facts found in the video. For example, find the facts of percentages of animal species population, percentages of arthropods, insects and beetles.
 
 
Visit the Insect project on the EnviroNet web site (http://earth.simmons.edu/ ) (Hint: Contact an online expert for those curious questions).
 
Construct a database on a insect transect or types of insects/characteristics found (Suggested software Claris Works, Microsoft Works or TableTop ).
 
Construct a Timeline showing a monarch butterfly's lifecycle (Timeliner software).
 
Exchange information with schools in another part of the country using email.
 
 
*Note: Other videodiscs available in the Central Office Curriculum Center...
