Teacher will initiate a discussion of research techniques and strategies to be utilized by students to find information from a myriad of information sources. Refer to appendices (Big Six Information Skills) and a list of recommended electronic resources. (Teachers require primary source information be submitted with the finished product.)
 
Teacher will divide students into groups and assign each group to a workstation with an electronic encyclopedia to prepare a research project that is curriculum related. For example, Native Americans, Presidents, Nobel Prize winners, etc.
 
 
You will need a variety of electronic encyclopedias (i.e., Groliers, Encarta, Golden Book, etc.) and access to at least 3 or 4 (can be accomplished in the single computer classsroom) computer workstations with CD-ROM encyclopedia drivers installed, as well as access to a printer.
 
 
Select a subject-related topic to research.
 
Identify a search strategy:
bulletWrite a research or thesis statement.
bulletPrepare a list of keywords, search words or concepts using your word processor.
bulletExecute the search.
bulletPrint the selected text from the article.
bulletExtract information from the source, capture an image, (ie. take notes, highlight) and construct their own points of view.
bulletOrganize and present their information in word processed form.
bulletCite their sources in their bibliography and citations (footnotes).
 
 
Apply the search techniques to an Internet resource.
 
Evaluate internet sites for content and effectiveness.
 
Write a review or a critique of selected internet sites include capture images from the web sites or graphics.
 
Conduct a Scavenger Hunt on the Internet.
