Differentiate between color characteristics such as:
- passive-aggressive
- receding-advancing

 

- Display and discuss examples of color characteristics using prints, book illustrations, students' work or teacher's examples.

- Present video Color or Tempera Painting-Color & Design.

Make a color value painting which shows an illusion of depth by use of warm, intense colors in the foreground and cool, lightened colors in the background. Teacher observation.

 

Set up and paint a still life with objects that are dominantly cool colors and place some small warm colored objects around them (partner could reverse color arrangement and paint). Share and compare. - Design Concepts & Applications by Cheatham, Cheatham, & Haler

  Demonstrate advanced painting techniques using watercolor, tempera, and acrylics.

 

Demonstrate the differences between painting with watercolor, tempera, acrylic painting. Faciliate discussion concerning the merits of each in solving specific creative problems. Create a trifold painting using watercolors, tempera and acrylics, one media for each section. Share, compare, and discuss. Identify personal preferences and explain reasoning. Teacher observation. Design and conduct a survey of middle grade students regarding art media preferences. Analyze, graph and share survey results with suitable audience. - Internet sites

  Demonstrate advanced printmaking techniques.

 

Demonstrate various printmaking techniques. Do a reduction print using foam board. Each time students print, they remove more of the plate and then print over the original print in successive colors. Describe a process in which personal expression, imagination and visual thinking were applied to solve a creative or artistic problem.

 

- Discuss the interpretation of personal feelings in artwork. Show examples of abstract, surreal, nonobjective styles of artwork such as Dali, Miro and Magritte.

Listen to various contrasting musical selections and interpret the music using elements of art and principles of design. Students discuss how their interpretation, express feelings.

  Analyze and discuss works of art (art appreciation and history) by identifying and describing materials, techniques, and styles. Provide examples of the works of famous artists. Lead a class discussion that compares and contrasts their styles and techniques with other artists. Create an original piece in the style of an artist they admire. Explain the work and its inspiration. Teacher observation/assessment.

- Choose an American artist or movement. Research and identify representative work(s). Share information in class presentation.

- Prepare an American Art gallery display to present all students' projects in an organized way.
