Resources

Formulate strategies for numerical computations. - Read Annie's One to Ten. Identify combinations that make 10 from book.

- Use groups to tens to mentally add and subtract numbers.

Make up work problems to accompany pictures in book. Make partner charts for 10's to help remember. Apply to addition of 3 or more addends. Look for 10's first.   Write their own picture book in the pattern of Annie's One to Ten, using their own name, pattern and creative drawings or designs from computer.

Popcorn Predictions NCTM Addenda, Gr. 3 pp. 11-12.
Gather resources: scales, popcorn, hot air popper, 2 sizes of paper bags, scoops, bowls, jars and cookie sheets. Teacher has overhead of 2 x 5 grid and some popcorn kernels. Demonstrate an estimation strategy by random placement of popcorn on grid. Queries students about accuracy of method.
Work in small group with 1/2 cup popcorn kernels and 2 x 5 grid. Students work together to reach a consensus estimate of number of kernels. Record their strategy. then must estimate the weight popped and unpopped. Estimate the size of container needed to held popped popcorn. Students report all estimates. Compare with other groups. Eat the popcorn.   Read Popcorn by Frank Asch.Calculate cost of making popcorn compared to buying it. Chart information. Share with appropriate audience.

Resources

Develop calculator operations and key use through estimation.

Present word problem on overhead to class. Discuss problem, identify key elements, process to be used. Estimate answer. Then use overhead calculator to compute. Check answer against estimate. Repeat steps.

Play Beat the Calculator with partner. Both students have group of problems. One does pencil/paper, one uses calculator. First one with correct answer wins point. Repeat until all problems are solved.   Explore numbers - on calculator devise problems that will result in spelling a real word. - Overhead calculator.

- Calculators (1 per 2 students).
