Estimate sums and differences to 10,000.

Model estimation strategies by sharing thinking process as class goes through steps. [Metacognition] Make chart/presentation to show examples and value of estimation in real life contexts.

Students create estimation problems to share with partner. Student articulates reasoning and method used for solution.

Use, "compatible numbers," for mental addition and subtraction.

Demonstrate compatible numbers.
2 digit, 3 digit, 4 digit.
25-75 125-375 6725
33-67 425-575 3275 Apply to addition and subtraction problems.

Plan a trip using state map. Estimate distances, total cost, gas consumption, etc.   When presented with problems in other content areas, students can apply compatible numbers as shortcut for computation.

Round mixed number and improper fractions to the nearest whole number to estimate in addition and subtraction problems. Use fraction pieces to model the part of a mixed number that is a fraction and round. Students explain which strategy would be best for a given situation and why. On-going throughout fraction unit of study. Circle numbers in newspapers and determine if they represent exact or approximate values.

Use estimation strategies to determine reasonableness of solution.

Show students a variety of approaches to arrive at reasonable answers.
Randomly choose a problem being worked on in class and generate an estimate before solving a problem.   - Determine if there are appropriate uses of each strategy and when would they be used.

Round decimals to the nearest whole number.

Discuss income tax time and rounding of.

Ex: Income $410.50 = $411.00

Students' estimates should mirror the total of the slip. Using 5 digits ask students to write a number rounded to a specific whole number. 4, 3, 9, 8, 7 rounds to 44,000 or 98,000 or 87,000

Research rounding off in

money
weights
time
population
interest
