  Estimate to determine numbers.

Discuss reasonableness of facts and answers. Do Activity 4, p. 19. Have students bring in news clippings to evaluate.

Justify reasonableness of answers to various problems.

Sara placed one number on each side of 2 disks. She said that if she flipped the disks and added the 2 numbers factoring up, the sum was always one of the following numbers: 1, .23, .87, .1. What numbers could Sara have placed on each face of the 2 disks? Share reasoning.

Resources

Use estimation to select most appropriate solutions. Distribute copy of Activity 1, "How Good is Your Estimate," 20 cm. rules and meter sticks. Also copies of Activities 1-6 for group work. Estimate and then measure various objects and then graph results. Work in groups to determine reasonable values.

Write a paragraph explaining graph of estimates vs. measurement. Oral discussion of group results.   - Measurement In the Middle Grades, p. 15.

- Developing Number Sense, p. 16-20.
