Compare perimeter, using models.

Use overhead pattern blocks to model finding perimeter.
Triangle = 3 units
Hexagon = 6 units
Trapezoid = 5 units
Square = 4 units

Work in pairs to find perimeters of 2 blocks pushed together. (Teacher-prepared task cards identifying blocks used.) Make a large design with pattern blocks. Determine perimeter. Translate to grid or dotted paper. Share-showcase.

Resources

  Use tangrams, geoboards, and pattern blocks to demonstrate knowledge of geometric shapes. - Read Grandfather Tang's Story by Tompert.

- Demonstrate manipulation of tangrams.

Manipulate tangrams to create shapes named in story. Translate to grid or dotted paper, label and identify shapes.   Create a design with pattern blocks and give it a value as in What's It Worth? (p. 19) or given a value, create a symmetrical design reflecting that value.

  Construct geometric shapes using position vocabulary.

Introduce Do As I Say game with pattern blocks. Work in pairs. Leader creates design in pattern blocks hidden from partner. Gives oral directions on placement of blocks to copy shape. Once directions are complete, barrier is removed. Designs compared.

  Do As I Say, only write directions using shape and position vocabulary. Good center activity to be shared with classmates.

- Pattern Blocks.

Set parameters and goals for small group work. Try to find as many difference combinations of half dollars, nickels, dimes, quarters as possible to make $1.

- Using play money, will find and record different combinations in small groups.

- Results are shared/compared.

  With partner, play Money Exchange Game:Each player begins with $1.00 bill. At each turn they roll the dice and put the amount they roll into the bank, exchanging higher denominations for lower as needed. First player with less than 15 cents wins.
