Resources

Demonstrate understanding of operations & properties of functions.

-Explain process of
evaluation
composition
domain, range
addition/subtraction

-Sketch and interpret graphs arising from situations presented verbally and pictorially.

-Create "function machines" which allow one to change a "rule", input a value, and get a value output.

-Solve Set A Problem Set by sketching and identifying functions.

Allow students to pick own numbers to put in "machine." They determine output. Class "creates" own quiz. -Create a "composition function machine."

- Be able to create "inverse" function machines so compose is x.

-Solve Set B Problem Set.

Resources

Describe, develop, solve algebraic situations with matrices.

-Specify uses of rows vs. columns and their meaning.

-Introduce quadratic functions.

-Collect samples of information organized in "grid" fashion and learn how to apply operations on real-life problems.

-Use the CBL and 83 to do a ball bounce experiment and fit a quadratic thru a) guess & check; b) matrice solutions; c) regressions from calculator.

-Use CBL and calculators What Goes Up experiment to get equations. Then solve.

Create problems and solutions using matrices...

Resources

Describe and use the inverse relationship between functions, including exponential & logarithmic. - Explain difference between, "generational," chart (exponents) and, "tournament elimination," chart (logarithms).

- Use graphing calculator to graph both and see inverse relationship.

- Skeeter are Overrunning the World, modeling activity... Simms Project.

- Create graphs (amazingly similar).

Vary populations. Use the TI-83 to show the function and its inverse - and the relationship to y=x.

Resources

Apply to other areas the foundations of: limit, rate of change, slope of a tangent, area under a curve.

-Use "rate of change" terminology in linear slope problems.

- Limit-teach meaning of asymptotes in graphs of rational fens and hyperbolas.

-Introduce concept of limits through graph and sequence/series.

-Be able to find slopes by using points, looking at graphs.

- Graph rational fens (self and with calculator).

- Graph hyperbolas and find slopes of asymptotes.

-CBL experiment - Walk This Way.

  - Be able to fully explain idea of "steepness" and how/when steepness reaches its limits.Explain how TI-83 shows a graph approaching a limit.

- Real World Experiments - CBL.
