  Demonstrate powers & scientific notation as alternate ways of writing numbers with the assistance of calculators.

 

Show how very large and very small can be written using positive and negative exponents and scientific notation. Convert very large and very small numbers to decimals. Students write examples of very large and very small members and their relationships to "real" items.

  Identify, use scientific notation.

 

Have students list planets in order of distance from sun in decimal and scientific notation. Be able to give examples of very large and very small numbers such as real life statistics. With calculator, determine when positive and negative integer powers become small enough to appear in scientific notation.
