Problem-Solving

Students will:

1. Use multiple approaches to investigate and understand mathematical content.

2. Formulate problems from everyday and mathematical situations.

3. Develop and apply strategies to solve a wide variety of problems, including multi-step and non-routine problems.

4. Verify and interpret results with respect to the original problem.

5. Generalize solutions and strategies to new problem situations.

6. Acquire confidence in using mathematics meaningfully.

7. Recognize and formulate problems from within and outside mathematics.

Content

Number Sense, Estimation, & Computation:

1. Demonstrate an understanding and application of: numbers to one million, concepts of adding/subtracting fractions, zero and one as the additive and multiplicative identities.

2. Mentally add/subtract two-digit numbers.

3. Justify solutions to word problems involving whole numbers, fractions, decimals, ratios.

4. Extend multiplication/division by powers of ten, factors, prime factors.

5. Use a calculator to: multiply/divide large numbers, develop order of operations.

6. Use long division to one decimal place.

7. State basic multiplication and division facts 0-144.

8. Round decimals to the nearest hundredth.

9.Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals.

Geometry and Measurement:

1. Identify polygons and quadrilaterals.

2. Measure/calculate the perimeter of polygons.

3. Identify the relationship between radius, diameter, and circumference through concrete examples.

4. Use a protractor to draw and compare angles.

5. Demonstrate an understanding of common units of measurement within the same measurement system.

6. Estimate weight, length, and capacity.

Patterns, Relations, & Functions:

1. Locate missing terms in a sequence using powers of ten.

2. Use patterns and calculators to explain the rules of divisibility.

3. Demonstrate an understanding of variables to discover arithmetic processes, patterns when converting fractions to decimals.

Statistics & Probability:

1. Determine validity of statements based on data.

2. Make predictions based on experimental and theoretical probabilities, and calculate averages.

Communications

Students will:

1. Relate physical materials, pictures, and diagrams to mathematical ideas.

2. Reflect on and clarify thinking about mathematical ideas and situations.

3. Relate everyday language to mathematical language and symbols.

4. Use the skills of reading, listening, and viewing to interpret and evaluate mathematical ideas.

5. Model situations by using oral, written, concrete, pictorial, graphical, and algebraic methods.

6. Develop mathematical ideas, formulate mathematical definitions, and express generalizations discovered through investigations.

7. Ask clarifying and extending questions related to mathematics which students have read or heard about.

8. Appreciate the economy, power, and elegance of mathematical notation and its role in the development of mathematical ideas.
