Grade 6

Addendum to Content Area

 Number Sense, Estimation, & Computation:

1.      Describe rational, whole, integer number systems.

2.      Demonstrate an understanding and application of prime and composite numbers, squares, percents, powers, square roots, exponents, ratios.

3.      Demonstrate an understanding of place value to the millionth.

4.      Demonstrate number-connectedness by fractions to decimals and decimals to percents.

5.      Explain in writing the reasons for mathematical computations/solutions.

6.      Apply the Order of Operations for expressions involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with grouping symbols (+, –, x, ÷).

7.      Formulate strategies to eliminate multiple choice solutions through estimations skills.

8.      Estimate results of computations with whole numbers, and with positive fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, percents, and powers of ten.  Describe reasonableness of estimates

9.      Accurately and efficiently add, subtract, multiply, and divide positive fractions and mixed numbers. Simplify fractions.

10. Demonstrate an understanding of the inverse relationships of addition and subtraction, and use that understanding to simplify computation and solve problems.

Patterns, Relations, & Algebra:

1.      Replace variables in written equations with given values and evaluate/simplify. e.g., 2(m) + 3 when m = 4.

2.      Graph ordered pairs and relationships.

3.      Identify and develop patterns in tables, graphs, rules, etc., to solve problems.

4.      Use variables to symbolize relationships between the 4 fundamental operations.

5.      Identify mathematical relationships and produce and interpret graphs that represent the relationship between two variables in everyday situations.

6.      Identify and describe relationships between two variables with a constant rate of change. Contrast these with relationships where the rate of change is not constant.

7.      Solve linear equations using concrete models, tables, graphs, and paper-pencil methods.

Geometry:

1.      Demonstrate an understanding and application of the properties of 2-D and 3-D geometric figures.

2.      Identify relationships among points, lines, and planes (e.g., intersecting, parallel, perpendicular).

3.      Identify types of symmetry, including line and rotational.

4.      Determine if two shapes are congruent by measuring sides or a combination of sides and angles, as necessary; or by motions or series of motions, e.g., translations, rotations, and reflections.

Measurement:

1.      Calculate area and perimeter of polygons 

2.      Identify, measure, and describe circles and the relationships of the radius, diameter, circumference, and area (e.g., d = 2r, p = C/d), and use the concepts to solve problems

3.      Use appropriate measuring devices/units to measure length, capacity, volume, area, angles, etc.

4.      Find volumes and surface areas of rectangular prisms.

5.      Identify, measure, describe, classify, and construct various angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals.

6.      Solve problems involving proportional relationships and units of measurement, e.g., same system unit conversions, scale models, maps, and speed.

7.      Find the sum of the angles in simple polygons (up to eight sides) with and without measuring the angles

 Statistics & Probability:

1.      Demonstrate an understanding and application of range, mode, frequency tables, mean, median.

2.      Use creative graphing and diagramming techniques to interpret data (written and orally) and analyze the outcomes.

3.      Demonstrate an understanding of probability.  Predict the probability of outcomes of simple experiments (e.g., tossing a coin, rolling a die) and test the predictions. Use appropriate ratios between 0 and 1 to represent the probability of the outcome and associate the probability with the likelihood of the event.
