categories.
|
- Puddle Questions - Ladybugs and Leaves activity from Addenda gr.1 p. 7 guided questions such as, "How many ways can you arrange three ladybugs?"
|
Students work in pairs to arrange and then record their
ladybug arrangements per teacher's questioning.

| Collect, record data using tally method. | Teacher creates and makes available a chart with student
names and boxes beside it, one for each school day. Students are directed to check in
daily by putting a sticker in the box next to his/her name. Times present and absent can
be counted. Daily count of how many students are present can be done and recorded in on
another record sheet. Bar or picture graphs can be done to show attendance over an
interval of time (1 week, 2 weeks, month, etc.).
|
Students use Unifix cubes or counters to construct simple
record of attendance data.
|
Students who are able can collect and record more specific
data &emdash; how many girls, boys are present? How many students are wearing shoes
with Velcro, etc.?
|
- Chart paper. - Writing paper. - Stickers. - unifix cubes. |

| Create a picture graph using single units for each picture. Develop, identify, compare, predict picture graphs. | - Teacher shares a pre-made picture graph with students.
Discussion ensues: Which has more? less? Any two the same, etc. - Students are directed to bring in pictures of pets: drawn, photo, magazine replica.
|
Students work in small groups to sort and paste pet pictures
to create their own picture graph. Group shares graph with class and discussion about
more/ less ensues. Comparisons can be made betwee graphs from small groups. Data from the
small groups can be collated to make a total class bar graph.
|
- Pictures. - Butcher paper. - glue. - Markers.

| Identify events that are sure to occur, not sure to occur, and those that we cannot determine. | Teacher reads book like Rosie's Walk that has
predicable events. Teacher prepares a three column chart with heading: sure to happen, not
sure to happen, maybe. As teacher reads, discussion occurs and events can be listed on the
chart under the appropriate heading.
|
- Students make predictions and answer teacher questions
about the likelihood of potential consequences. - Color Tiles in a secret bag/box: Two tiles put in of different colors: students make predictions and record color words on teacher made tally sheet with the three headings. Students can reach and pull out tiles to verify predictions.
|
- Color tiles. - Rosie's Walk by Pat Hutchins. - Teacher-made chart with headings. - Secret bags/boxes. - Color tiles or Unifix cubes - Teacher-made tally sheets.
