Geo-Bee
Fourth and fifth graders battled through 7 rounds of geo-bee questions in their classrooms to determine two classroom winners. The questions? Oh, things like 'Which type of climate is found in the southeastern United States?' Or, 'The Drake Passage lies between Antarctica and which continent?' (humid subtropical, South America) The National Geographic Society provided the questions, the students trid to provide the answers.
On January 11th fourteen semi-finalists gathered after the classroom competitions to sit before their peers, teachers and some family members to be subjected to several more rounds of increasingly difficult questions, such as, 'The Sulu Sea separates which island country from Malaysia?' (Philippines) This annual event ended climatically as the last two finalists, Erika and Catherine went head to head in an intensive single elimination contest. After many tense moments, finally, Catherine emerged the Davis Hill winner. Her prize? A medal...and oh yes, the opportunity to take a 70 question test. The test has been sent off to the Society and we await word to discover if Catherine will be invited to the Massachusetts State Geo-Bee. No matter that outcome, the Davis Hill community would like to express its pride in the fourteen students that made it to our stage. Congratulations to all of you!
