First grade is the initial introduction to a full day of school. Students develop a strong foundation in both academic and social areas. Students are assessed in order to succeed at their own pace through beginning, developing, and independent reading stages.

General Curriculum

Language Arts
Phonemic awareness, structural analysis, reading comprehension, oral reading, spelling, grammar, penmanship, speaking, listening.

Mathematics
Everyday use of numbers, number patterns, measurement, mental math, facts, geometry

Social Studies/Science
Community, holidays, life cycles, seasons, plants/trees, polar regions, simple machine
