HOLDEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS-
RECOMMENDED TITLES FOR SUMMER (AND YEAR-ROUND) READING
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I am very pleased to present each family with a copy of the 2007 edition of Recommended Titles for Summer (And Year-Round) Reading for the Holden Elementary Schools. These are the fruit of the ongoing efforts of Davis Hill School library aide, Mrs. Connie Marr. She puts in extensive hours each year revising the lists to include recently recommended titles. She does this by reading reviews of recently published books and selecting those that are award winners or with the highest ratings or very positive reviews. Mrs. Marr then reads as many as she can and consults with the children's librarian at the Gale Free Library on the others. A copy of the most recent list has been provided to the Gale Free Library. There are two lists for each year: incoming grades K-2 and incoming grades 3-5, keeping interest level in mind.
NOTES: Parents who have children in both age groupings are advised to note the contents of titles on the grades 3-5 list, since some may not consider the content of the more difficult books suitable for younger children, even if they may be excellent readers. Children in grades 3-5 should be encouraged to check out some of the higher level books on the K-2 list - interesting stories with great vocabulary! Some titles appear on both lists. If they were recommended for grades 1-6 or "all ages", they were put onto both lists.
Please remember that these are only suggestions and not required reading, and they are recommended for year - round reading and not just summertime.
I highly recommend the lists to you in guiding and encouraging your children in a program of reading over the summer and throughout the year! I hope that you will do all you can to inspire a program of summer and year - round reading in your children and that you will find the attached lists to be a useful tool and guide in this effort! I wish you all a most pleasant vacation season filled with the joys of summertime reading!
Sincerely,
Patricia A. Scales, Principal
