 Launching Readers' Workshop

Each September, teachers spend a number of weeks launching Readers' Workshop. Focus lessons during this unit of study familiarize students with the routines, behaviors, and habits of mind that will promote successful independent reading throughout the year. Sample launch lessons are provided below. Many of these lessons are replicated throughout grades 3-8 each year to review, refine, and solidify a successful workshop environment. Therefore, students may be familiar with many of the lessons. Regardless, it is important to repeat them each year so that students understand the expectations of workshop in your classroom. Modify these lessons as necessary to match middle school grades levels and the needs of your students. Review launch lessons throughout the year to remind students of behaviors and routines.
