Paper Use and Modification in Fundations
Fundations is a general education program designed to support students with varying needs. The program addresses handwriting, in addition to other skill areas, through a structured, multi-sensory approach. It will be necessary to make modifications to the Fundations handwriting approach at times, in order to address the needs of children who require further support.
While most children will be successful with the standard paper provided in the program, others will need access to modified formats of paper, including those with larger or smaller spacing, reduction of visuals, or elimination of the fourth line (the "worm line"). Teachers may use acceptable modification samples on this website or they may choose to generate their own modified paper, based on these samples, using software or other means.
The following information describes general use of paper grids at each grade level:
- The Fundations Wilson Writing Grid should be used during Fundations instruction in grades K-2.
- In Kindergarten, students should use the Fundations Wilson Writing Grid or blank unlined paper during Writers’ Workshop.
- In grade 1, students should use the Fundations Wilson Writing Grid (including any acceptable writing grid modifications) during Writers’ Workshop.
- In grade 2, students may use the Fundations Wilson Writing Grid (including any acceptable writing grid modifications) or any other form of paper during Writers’ Workshop.
- Acceptable modifications of the Fundations Wilson Writing Grid may be used based on individual student needs.
- Acceptable modifications include line spacing, elimination of the four pictures corresponding to each line, and/or elimination of the "worm line."
- View acceptable modifications online by clicking on Curriculum, selecting Fundations, and then Sample Paper Modifications in the left menu bar.
