September 1, 2011

Welcome to the 2011-12 school year. Attached to this letter you will find a copy of the grading system for Physical Education which is the same system used last year for grades 6-8.   The system is in rubric form.  There are six categories listed in the first column.  Students will be graded on all six categories for Terms 2 & 4 because of Fitness Challenges in October & May and only five for Terms 1 & 3.   The students have the opportunity to earn 4, 3, 2 or 1 points for each of the categories.  You will notice that there is a description of what needs to be observed, completed or achieved for a student to reach a certain point level.   On the back side of the rubric there are definitions for the terms listed in the rubric.  At the end of the unit or month, I will assign a point value for each category based on observations, assessments and achievements.  I will total up the points, convert the total to a letter grade for report card purposes using the point value conversion located on the back of the rubric and place the letter grade on the report card.  Also on the back you will find a place for you and your child to sign acknowledging that you have received and read the rubric.  Please tear off the signature part and have your child return it to class.

My hope is that this information will provide the students with the specific criteria in order to be successful in Physical Education class.  This information will also be on the school website and will be presented at the open house night for Physical Education.  Stay tuned for dates and times for open house nights.  If you have any questions, please contact me by phone 508-798-8576 or by email at william_sullivan@wrsd.net.
