Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to the 2009-10 school year. Attached to this letter you will find a copy of the new grading system for Physical Education. The first class or two of the school year will be spent communicating this new grading system to the students.I want to take this opportunity to inform you of this new grading system.

The system is in rubric form. There are six categories listed in the first column (five for the whole year and two for only October and May-term 1 & 4 and the last category listed is only for grades 4-8).The students have the opportunity to earn 4, 3, 2 or 1 points for each of the categories. You will notice that there is description of what needs to be observed, completed or achieved for a student to reach a certain point level. On the back side of the rubric there are definitions for the terms listed in the rubric. At the end of the unit or month, I will assign a point value for each category based on observations, assessments and achievements. For grade 3 I will transfer the point score to the appropriate place listed on the report card. For grades 4-8, I will total up the points, convert the total to a letter grade for report card purposes using the point value conversion located on the back of the rubric and place the letter grade on the report card.

My hope is that this information will provide the students with the specific criteria in order to be successful in Physical Education class. This information will also be presented at the open house night for Physical Education on September 16, 2009.You can address any questions at that time or you can contact me by phone at 508-798-8576.

Sincerely,
