Physical Education Safety
Mr. Sullivan

September 1, 2010

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I would like to take this opportunity to remind or inform you about the class rules as they pertain to safe participation in Physical Education.  I do require that all students have their hair up and out of the face, have their sneakers tied (strapped if necessary) tightly and properly as well as have them dressed in pants, shorts or a skort.
When the hair is not up and out of the face, vision may become impaired.  This may lead to collisions and other types of injuries. Even though your child may have short bangs, the hair along the sides of the head still could move into your child’s vision
If you or your child participates in any type of sport, you are aware of the need for the right type of footwear.  Due to the nature, direction and speed of our movements, the best type of footwear to wear in Physical Education class is sneakers.  They are the best for supporting, stabilizing and cushioning the ankles and feet of your children.  The preferred type of sneaker is one that is geared more towards function than fashion.  These types cover the whole foot and have laces or Velcro straps (two or more).  Examples of sneakers that would be unacceptable would be platforms, slip-ons, strap-heeled, zippered or open heeled or ones with open toes.  The slip-on sneakers are acceptable as long as they are sneakers, cover the whole foot and are not prone to easily coming off.  However, this type can stretch out over time and become loose.  There have been some students during kicking units who have had their sneaker fly off.
I just want to take as many precautions as possible to ensure the safety and physical development of all students. .  My hope is that you will join me in this endeavor.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Bill Sullivan, M. E.d.
