Supporting English Learners in Specialty Subjects

Supporting academic language development for English learners with English Language Development Standards.



This hands-on interactive course provides specialty area teachers, school psychologists and school counselors with a deeper understanding of how to identify, analyze and develop academic language for ELLs using Massachusetts English Language Development Standards and other tools. Course participants will learn how to apply language development strategies to their teaching context, taking into account the four domains (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and their students’ English proficiency. This course will meet the piece of the license requirements which states that those renewing a professional license will need to have 15 PDPs in the area of ELL topics. 



Audience: Teachers of Art, Music, PE, Health, School Psychologists, School Counselors, and other Specialty subjects. 


Format: Online - Zoom Meeting. 2 synchronous online ZOOM sessions and 3 asynchronous online independent work modules (15 hours total).

 Dates and times: Dec 2 - Jan 20th:

Module 1 asynchronous: Dec 2nd

 Module 2 synchronous ZOOM / in-person meeting: Dec. 9th 4:00-6:00

Module 3 asynchronous: Dec. 10th - Jan. 5th

  Module 4 synchronous ZOOM / in-person meeting: Jan. 6th 4:00-6:00

          Module 5 asynchronous: Jan 6th - Jan 19th


*All assignments due: Jan 20th

                    

15 PDPs will be awarded to those who attend all sessions and complete all assignments.
