Welcoming & Supporting Newcomer Students
Description:
This MATSOL online course focuses on an asset-based approach to welcoming and supporting newcomers (students who have recently arrived in the United States). Explore the mindsets, programming models, and instructional practices. Participants will develop the knowledge and skills to meet the needs of multilingual newcomers and support them in achieving academic and linguistic success.
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- Create culturally responsive welcoming practices to engage newcomers and build partnerships with their families.
- Examine practices to support and instruct newcomers from varied backgrounds and with differing instructional and emotional needs.
- Use an asset-based approach to build upon a newcomer's first language and experiences as a foundation for new learning.
Audience:
Teachers, administrators and support staff.
This course is limited to 25 participants.

- Module 2 (Zoom): Thursday, Dec 1, 4:00-7:00 pm
- Module 3 (asynchronous 3 hours) Dec 2nd-7th, 2022
- Module 4 (Zoom): Thursday, Dec 8, 4:00-7:00 pm
- Module 5 (asynchronous 3 hours) Dec 9th-15th
- Final Product: Dec 15, 2022
