We are pleased to be able to offer Gr. 1-5 teachers of Title I students an opportunity to participate in Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling; (LETRS) training. This professional development opportunity and the cost of the substitutes is being funded by Title I.
LETRS was developed and authored by literacy experts Louisa Moats and Carol Tolman. LETRS is a training course that begins with guiding participants through the science of reading, early and advanced phonics skills, screening and assessment, vocabulary, language, comprehension and writing skills. Training has been designed for ELA/Literacy teachers of students in Pre-K-3rd grade as well as teachers of 4th and 5th grade students who struggle with reading. The course is broken into 2 volumes, including 8 units of study. Learning includes synchronous online sessions, online coursework and a bridge to practice to bring learning to the daily classroom environment.
We are able to provide up to 24 teachers with LETRS training during the 2022-2023 school year. Volume 1 will begin in November 2022 and will conclude June of 2023, which will include 4-live online sessions, 3 of which will be scheduled within the school day where teacher substitutes will be provided. The 4th day is to be scheduled in June, after the close of school. Tentative dates for the 4-online sessions are November 29th, January 31th, April 25th, and June 20th. Those interested in participating must commit to attending all four days this year. In addition, Volume 2 will be offered beginning in the fall of 2023 contingent upon funding availability. Interested teachers should apply through this google link by Thursday, November 10, 2022. The goal for selecting participants will be to have balanced representation from different grade levels and Title I schools.
