Statement Made by Jen Lynds on behalf of ABA PA Teachers Union.

****

Hi all,

My name is Jen Lynds, and I am a co-steward of the ABA PA Union. I was asked to share a public comment with concerns and requests by the SEPAC leadership, similar to the ones we hear at the School Committee meetings. I am sorry that I cannot be here tonight to deliver this in person. For those of you who may not know me, I have been working for the WRSD since the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, and have been an ABA PA since the 2012-2013 school year. Across my 8 years as an ABA PA, I have had the opportunity to work with some amazing families, and look forward to working with many more of you as time goes on!

Since that fateful day back in March, we’ve encountered so many unknowns head on, and worked hard to be in constant communication with our teachers, BCBAs, and Administrators, and have been trying to get responses from DESE, and our State and Local reps about the ever-changing status of how we support you, but also maintain the health and safety of ourselves, and your children, so we can continue to support you. We’ve felt the burden of trying to do it all, the anxiety of the “what happens if”, and the stress of “am I doing enough, or should I be doing more”. While some of us may never know the true extent of what you, our families that we support, are going through, there are others of us who do. Our varying situations have allowed for us to ask thoughtful questions, have some great discussions with leadership, and made our collaborative efforts even stronger than before.

We are concerned about many of the same things you are, just maybe in a slightly different way. We are concerned about everything from what your child will think of seeing us in our masks and PPE, to how they will react when we work on helping them wear their own. We’re concerned about their willingness to come back to school, and hoping that we have just the right toy or the right snack was sent in to help remind them how much both you and we care about them. We’re concerned about how they will react when they see their classroom (be it again, or their new one) with all of the changes that have had to be made due to the pandemic. We’re concerned about how we will help them socialize even though we have to social distance. We’re concerned about having enough time to sanitize items or places like the bathroom so they don’t have to wait longer than before because we know that waiting, for everyone, is hard sometimes. We’re also concerned about our ability to really connect and know your child because of the new guidelines for everyone’s health and safety.

Please know that we miss you and your children, and we want nothing more than to be able to see everyone again in person while being able to ensure not only our own health and safety, but yours as well. I know that, personally, I’d never be able to forgive myself if, despite all of my cautiousness, I were to be asymptomatic and unknowingly pass it on to a co-worker or a student I work with, and I’m positive my fellow co-workers feel the same. We are lucky to live in an area that currently measures low in our State, and for that we are all grateful, but we also still want to make sure that we are thoughtful now, so we can continue to see everyone later.

In terms of requests, please continue to communicate with us as soon as you can. As has been abundantly evident over the past months, communication is the key to our success. The sooner we know, the sooner we can help. We recognize that it’s not always possible to reach out right away, but please don’t leave us in the dark either. We can only help your child continue to grow based on what we see ourselves, or know from you. We want to make your life as easy as we can, but we can’t do that if we don’t know about a need you have. Please remember that we are human, and have our own families to take care of as well. We know that you have your child’s best interest at heart, and that in the heat of a moment, it’s easy to forget we have families too, but we promise we aren’t trying to make you wait intentionally, and we want the best for your child as well.

Lastly, when we are virtual, thank you for letting us into your home. We know that can’t be easy, as it’s not easy for us either. Please also don’t be afraid to let us know if there’s a new toy, song, or video that your child likes. (If you can send us a link, even better!) At times, we get tired of hearing the same thing too, so if we can help spice things back up, we’d love to do it!

Thank you so much for everything you do! We look forward to continuing to support you and your child, and to continue collaborating with everyone. Have a wonderful night.
